Who we are

Dragon Tree Consortium is an informal open society that focuses on cooperation in Dragon tree research and conservation.

Aims

Scientific aims:

To be platform for initiation of samples exchange, joint research, joint project proposals. To identify gaps in our knowledge of dragon trees, to promote cooperation in research in following topics:

  • Systematics – taxonomy, evolution, biogeography, phylogenetics
  • Morphology and anatomy
  • Eco-physiology
  • Distribution, ecology, population structure, life history/growth
  • Species-specific relationships (role in the ecosystem; dragon trees as habitat or flag, umbrella species)
  • Ethnobotany
  • Historical roles (e.g., resin harvesting)
  • Chemical composition of resin and its medical use
  • Threat evaluation, nature conservation
  • Vegetation studies
  • Ecosystem services
Practical aims:
To share experience and knowledge in dragon trees conservation, to support awareness and education of local communities and decision makers to reach effective conservation measures, to support local initiatives in conservation efforts.
  • Initiate rescue programmes, conservation measures in situ including consulting activities and monitoring protocols
  • Actively search funding for meetings, conservation measures and local community support
  • To promote ex-situ conservation through seed banking and botanical gardens
  • Actively recruit organizations from the region in which all DTs grow
  • To promote awareness programmes, environmental educational centre to take care about education in conservation and cultural heritage preservation of dragon trees, virtual reality
